On the Road to Performance Improvement: Where Six Sigma and ISD Meet

Six Sigma and
Instructional Systems Design

With shrinking budgets, companies have to become more efficient. Six Sigma is a data-driven way to eliminate defects and waste in processes. Often improvements identified by Black Belts and performance improvement teams involve training solutions. It will help those of us in the human performance field to understand the Six Sigma methodology and its overlap with ISD and human performance improvement. After working in both fields for a number of years, I was able to see that there’s a natural overlap in parts of the Six Sigma methodology and ISD.

This presentation will present the basic Six Sigma problem solving structure and then demonstrate where it merges with ISD. Finally, we’ll discuss how those of us in the training and development field can help identifying appropriate performance improvements.

Presenter: Dr. Debbie Atkins

Dr. Debbie Atkins has been working in the training and development field for close to 25 years. After completing her Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Design from FSU, she has worked as an instructional designer and instructional design manager for LSI, a mid-sized defense contractor, an instructional design manager for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, and the Director of Creative Learning Services for FSCJ.

While at BCBSF, Debbie was selected to move into a Six Sigma black belt role. Shortly after completing her own training, she was asked to train other black belts. She eventually took on a master black belt role where she was responsible for the development and delivery of all process improvement training for the company.

For the past two years Debbie has owned her own company providing both instructional design and performance improvement solutions to companies.

Debbie's Company, Debbie Atkins Consulting, is a firm specializing in performance and process improvements. The firm helps people to be the best in their jobs they can be. My specialties include instructional design and development, process improvements (six sigma and others), and human performance improvements.
